Chittagong overview

When is the best time to fly to Chittagong?

Chittagong is a perfect destination for travellers any time of year, thanks to a relatively stable climate. The best time to visit the city is between November and March, when temperatures hover around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. This peak season, particularly the months of March and April, also bring a flurry of annual events and festivals to Chittagong. One of the most notable is the Chittagong Hill Tract New Year celebration, held in the spring.

Between April and October, the city turns hot, humid and muggy. Wet weather also deters tourists, but those willing to brave the heat will find the best deals to be had during these hot, wet months.

City overview

As the second largest city in Bangladesh and the country’s largest seaport, the town of Chittagong is a delight for travellers looking to dive into Bangladesh head first. Plenty of attractions vie for attention when in Chittagong, whether it’s the beaches that line the city, the historic landmarks or the natural wonders.

Patenga Sea Beach is one of the most popular coastal stretches near the city. Lined with boulders that save the shore from erosion, the sandy beach offers a gorgeous view of the Bay of Bengal.

Batali Hill is another place of interest. As the highest point in the city, the hill offers sweeping views of Chittagong and the jetties of Chittagong seaport. From here, visitors have the best view of the sun settings over the Bay of Bengal.

Chittagong’s Second World War history is memorialised at the Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery. More than 700 soldiers who served and died during the war are buried here, and it is a must-visit for history buffs.

Visitors can enjoy the water without visiting the coast with a trip to Foy’s Lake, a manmade lake surrounded by green hills. Designed long before the independence of Bangladesh, Foy’s Lake offers water sports and an onsite amusement park.

Getting around Chittagong

There are several ways visitors can get around Chittagong, including public transportation. Auto-rickshaws are plentiful throughout the city, as are baby taxis. These are also more convenient for visitors than the local bus system, which can be somewhat challenging for tourists to use. However, those willing to navigate the bus system will find that this is the cheapest way to get around, aside from walking. Manual rickshaws are also available throughout the city.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Shah Amanat International Airport (CGP) is about 12 miles (19 km) west of the city centre. Several options are available to get to the city from the airport. The most popular and convenient options are the microbuses and auto-rickshaws. Taxis and rental cars are also available round the clock outside the airport, but it is a considerably more expensive option.
