Once just an expanse of scrubland by a glorious sandy beach, today the Cypriot resort Protaras is a purpose-built satellite to nearby Ayia Napa. Slightly quieter than its rowdy club-filled neighbour, the resort is a firm favourite with British families who book flights to Protaras every summer to enjoy the sun, sea and expanses of sand on the ten-mile long Fig Tree Bay. It’s a typical seaside resort, built with the specific aim of enticing British holidaymakers: running alongside the beach are numerous villas and hotels, while a plethora of shops, tavernas, restaurants and bars keep the foreign tourists entertained while they’re not sunbathing.
It’s hardly the authentic Cypriot experience, but that’s not really the point for those who match a cheap Protaras flight with a cheery beach-front hotel and enjoy all the activities the resort has to offer.
