When is the best time to fly to Trieste?

The mild Mediterranean climate of Trieste does not have big seasonal changes, making it a pleasant place to visit throughout the year. But go prepared for the 'Bora', the strong wind that often blows through the region. The busiest time of the year is in June, July and August so hotels will be busier and flights to Trieste will be more expensive. For better deals, cheap flights to Trieste and a quieter visit, aim for the months either side. Whenever you choose to go, though, something is bound to be happening. In October the city hosts the Barcolana Regatta when sailors of all ages and skill take part in races. Every July and August sees the International Operetta Festival, first held as far back as 1801. Or if you prefer film, then the Trieste Film Festival, screening over 150 films, takes place in January.

Trieste overview

It's no wonder travellers choose to take flights to Trieste; this popular destination is beautiful and hums with life. Physically isolated from the rest of Italy this enchanting city climbs out of the Adriatic Sea.

Start your day in the vast waterfront Piazza Unita d'Italia and then wander through the narrow paved streets lined with pastel coloured buildings. Admire the neoclassical architecture surrounding the piazzas and look out for tantalising glimpses of the old Roman walls. The fairy tale Miramare Castle seems to grow out of the water. To get a taste of Trieste's wealthier days visit the Museo Revoltella. This former 19th century palazzo boasts gold dining rooms, immense chandeliers and silk hangings. Take a walk along the San Giusto Castle ramparts for a panoramic view of the city, the sea and the surrounding hills. Trieste is reputed to be one of the best places in Europe to get a cup of coffee and was one of the first places to import coffee and enjoy drinking it. Take a cup in one of the Viennese-style coffeehouses, such as the faded grandeur of the Caffe Pasticceria Pirona. This was a favourite haunt of James Joyce and the furnishings are as they were in his day. It is believed he created "Ulysses" here. You will find many restaurants and bars; don't plan on dining early however, as most do not get going until about 10pm.

Getting around Trieste
