When I was going to board, one of the staff members told me that I could not board with my passport bag because it was tree items and I would need to check a bag. This was so stupid ! The bag was small. So I had to put my things in my pockets, put the funny bag inside the other bag. Then go throw it. Then in the plane put everything back again in my funny bag.

Tucked away in the northwest corner of Vermont, the cosy city of Burlington truly is one of New England’s best kept secrets. The city is renowned for its regal Victorian architecture and artisan culture, with a plethora of arts and crafts boutiques offering all manner of unique and imaginative wares. But the most regal gem in the Queen City’s crown is the breathtaking shoreline of Lake Champlain, upon which the port of Burlington is built.
Burlington offers a complete package that few other small cities can match. On the surface, the city enjoys a gentle beauty that folds historic buildings with tree-lined streets and lakeside vistas, a winning combination that led to Forbes voting Burlington as Prettiest Town in America in 2010. The city is also consistently heralded as a leaf-peepers paradise for its arboreal prestige come autumn, with the skyline taken over by an eye-catching explosion of red, yellow and deepest persimmon. Yet there is more to the city than its handsome veneer, for beneath the visual charm lies a sophisticated atmosphere characterized by wineries, chocolatiers and brewpubs, as well as all manner of watersports held on Lake Champlain. The city’s history is also worth exploring, with a number of tours on offer that cover everything from the Colonial period, all the way up to the present day. Looking further afield, Burlington is located 50 minutes from the Canadian border, while those keen to see moose and bear can explore the stunning wilderness of the Green Mountains a couple of hours south.
Burlington is furnished by a very able and reliable bus network. Passes are available, as well as single and return tickets. Alternatively, the city also offers over 1,600 parking spaces should you arrive by car.
The easiest way to Burlington is to take a flight via Boston, New York (both La Guardia and JFK serve the city) and Chicago, but the best bet is to hire a car and drive. While public transport is offered from the airport, you may need to take change buses depending on the day and route taken.
Alternatively, the airport is served by a number of private hire taxi companies that will take you directly to the city centre. The city is located moments from I-89, and is also served by its own International Airport, although not all flights to Burlington from Europe access it directly. Finally, Greyhound coach lines offers services from Montreal to Boston.
