Peak season for booking flights to Kosice is during the local summer months from June to August when temperatures are around the mid to high 20s Celsius. It is easier to find cheap flights to Kosice travelling outside of these times, however and the ideal time to visit is during the shoulder season of April to May when the city enjoys mild weather. The second shoulder season from September to October can also see visitors make savings, however accommodation can be harder to find during the Wine Festival which takes place in mid-September. Beautiful and historic in equal parts, Kosice is the jewel of Eastern Slovakia. With an architectural heritage that spans from the Gothic to the Art Nouveau, the historic town centre helped earn Kosice the accolade of European City of Culture 2013. The main Hlvana Street is home to St. Elisabeth’s cathedral, a UNESCO protected 14th Century Gothic cathedral where visitors can ascend the tower to experience incredible views across the city. Hvlana Street is the main heartbeat of Kosice and the place to see the famous singing fountain, enjoy street theatre, go shopping or simply sit and enjoy an al fresco lunch or an evening drink.
By evening the Slovak State Philharmonic frequently perform in the city whilst other popular entertainment includes watching the HC Kosice Ice Hockey team at the Steel Arena.
Further buildings of note include the neo-Gothic Jakab’s Palace, St. Michael Chapel, another example of 14th century architecture and the neo-Baroque State Theatre which is as beautifully decorated on the interior as it is grand on the exterior.
Visitors can learn more about the regional history at the East Slovak Museum which charts the history of the area from the Stone Age onwards. The fascinating Miklus Prison Museum delves more specifically into the history of Kosice from Medieval times.
Winter visitors can travel to one of many nearby ski resorts in the area including Kave?any, whilst summer visitors who want to explore the natural surroundings should take a day hike on the stunning Tatra Mountains, a 2.5-hour drive from the city or head to the beautiful Slovak Paradise National Park.
The city offers an extensive choice of bus, tram or trolleybus. However the historical centre can be easily navigated on foot and the best way to see it all is to book a walking tour.
Flights to Kosice International Airport (KSC) arrive 6 miles (9.6 km) from the city centre. From the airport visitors can board the local bus service which departs from outside the main terminal. Passengers should buy their ticket from the machine before boarding. There are usually a number of taxis available but visitors should agree the price before the journey begins.
Travellers will need to book flights to Barca (KSC) if they wish to fly to Košice. The Košice airport is 3.6 mi from the city centre.
