Why visit Nuku’alofa?

Nuku’alofa is the capital of Tongatapu, Tonga’s largest island.  It’s surrounded by beautiful coral reefs, ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. The capital Nuku’alofa is located on the north coast of the island and provides holidaymakers with an extensive selection of accommodation options like hotels, guest houses including hostels, perfect for backpackers.  Why not arrange a coach tour to see the many places of interest?  Have your camera at the ready to take snapshots of the wooden Royal Palace which was built in 1867 and is the official residence of the King.  You’ll find plenty of exciting items to buy at Talamahu Market in Nuku’alofa.  It’s where local farmers sell their fresh produce, seasonal fruit, root vegetables, yams, kumara, manioke and taro.  Check out the upstairs stalls that have clothing, shoes, local handicraft carvings and jewellery for sale. The Tongan National Cultural Centre is well worth a visit.  There’s a wide range of crafts, carvings, tapa making and weaving on show along with exhibitions of the Kingdom’s historical past.  For something a little different, spend a day at Anahulu Cave.  It’s an exciting stalactite cave around 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Fatumu Village that also has an amazing underground freshwater swimming pool.  Many people visit the island to see the natural blowholes, one of nature’s wonders. Head to the south west of the island near the village of Houma to watch the waves crashing into the reef.

Getting around Nuku'alofa

Local buses are the cheapest way to get around the city especially with reduced rates for children.  Taxis are also available but do barter for the price.  How about hiring a bicycle so you can stop off at one of the city’s many restaurants and cafes?  Try the local delicacies such as seafood, yams, pumpkins, bananas and coconuts.

Getting from the Airport to Nuku’alofa

Fua’amotu International Airport (TBU) is on the south side of the island around 21 miles (34 km) from the capital Naku’alofa.  Many hotels in Naku’alofa provide their guests with free airport shuttle services to take them directly to their accommodation.  There are also regular bus transfer services available directly outside the airport terminal.  Taxis provide an alternative option with a set standard fare for four passengers.
