Located in the historic Transylvania region of Romania, Sibiu is filled with beautiful architecture, great places to eat and drink, and wonderful museums and galleries to explore. In the centre of the city is the Piata Mare or Big Square, which is ideal for taking a stroll, sipping a coffee, or doing a little shopping. The Astra National Museum Complex is Europe’s largest original museum, and is a splendid place where you really can lose yourself amid the various treasures. The Orthodox Cathedral in the centre of Sibui is one of the key architectural gems in the region. Just a short drive away lies the stunning Balea Glacier Lake. This is a wonderful location for a hike, a stroll, a picnic, or even a freshwater swim. The Piata Mica, a smaller square located adjacent to the Big Square, is a very picturesque part of town, and a lovely place to stop for lunch. If you want to learn more about the exciting and multi layered history of the region then be sure to visit the Brukenthal National Museum during your stay in the city.
Buses are the main means of public transport in Sibiu. There are a grand total of 20 bus routes connecting the different landmarks within the city. There are also two more bus routes which will take you to the villages that are in the countryside surrounding Sibiu. However, Sibiu is a comparatively small city, and so you can actually make it to all of the main sites, such as the museums and the cathedral, on foot. If you like, you can also take a taxi to a particular area of interest. Hiring a car is another option, and this is particularly good if you want to visit attractions a little further away, such as the lake.
Sibiu International Airport (SBZ) is located just 1.8 miles (3 km) to the west of the city centre. Take a shuttle bus or a taxi to make the short and inexpensive journey to your hotel. You can share the ride with other passengers if you choose to hire a taxi, making the journey even cheaper. Or, just hire a car online and get the car hire company to have it waiting for you at the airport so you can drive yourself and your luggage to the hotel.
