BAA has launched a text messaging service at London Heathrow Airport that will keep passengers informed of the status of their flights.

The Flying Messenger service will distribute information – to customers who sign up online – on expected departure times, delays and when boarding is beginning.

The service, which passengers can sign up to until two hours before their flight’s departure, will be extended to BAA’s six other UK airports in 2009 Duncan Garrood, commercial director at BAA, believes that this service will enable passengers to “relax and enjoy their time” before they fly.

He said: “This easy-to-use, free text service will enable passengers to relax and enjoy the departure lounge without the need to intermittently check the airport information screens.”

The service will also be used by companies to send airport shopping and currency exchange offers. Yesterday, Heathrow’s Terminal 5, which had a problematic opening in March, was awarded the supreme winner at the Institution of Structural Engineers Awards.
