London Heathrow Airport could potentially become the centre of a new high-speed rail network, it has been suggested.

According to The Sunday Times, a transport minister has signalled his support for the idea of a rail link from the hub to various cities across the UK.

Lord Adonis made his comments to the newspaper ahead of an announcement from the government over its decision on whether or not to allow a third runway to be built at Heathrow.

He said that the development of both the new terminal and a high-speed rail link would be a good way to improve transport links to and from the capital. Lord Adonis commented: “I think that it’s an attractive idea.

It’s vital that we have an integrated approach to planning new rail capacity and any new airport capacity that’s also required.” Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon was due to make an announcement regarding the runway towards the end of 2008 but put if off until the start of the New Year.

The Daily Telegraph reported that a committee joined together shortly before Christmas to discuss the pros and cons of a new runway, with input from airport operator BAA and eco-friendly groups.
