Empowered by immigrants who worked the steel mills for years, travellers booking flights to Pittsburgh today will be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have steel roots. Most of the steeled-milled skyline has been replaced with Pittsburgh’s contemporary art museums and sculptures, glass buildings, and natural beauty.

Flights to Pittsburgh are packed with business travellers heading to corporate meetings and students heading back for final exams, but for the traveller, Pittsburgh offers more than boardrooms and class lectures. It’s one of the most water-filled cities in America, thanks to its location along the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and it’s not surprising that Pittsburgh is home to more bridges than any other city in America. Outdoors enthusiasts booking cheap flights to Pittsburgh will enjoy hiking in the Allegheny Mountains, while city-goers will revel in Pittsburgh’s famed shopping district. If you’re in the mood for a little adrenaline rush, head to Pittsburgh’s amusement park where you’ll find the fastest track roller-coaster in the United States.

Getting Around Pittsburgh

Downtown Pittsburgh is compact and designed to be enjoyed by pedestrians, with parks and plazas spaced out between the office towers and shopping streets. If you need to travel a little further, however, head to the subway, known in Pittsburgh as the 'T', a small but clean and reliable light rail system that covers a four-stop loop. A branch of the subway also crosses under the Monogahela River and emerges above ground to serve the southern suburbs.

The city has an extensive bus network with multiple routes connecting downtown to the attractions on the north side, Oakland and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The Central Business District is a Free Fare Zone and buses are free from 4am to 7pm daily, while the 'T' is free 24 hours a day. Visitors are always particularly keen to ride the historic Duquesne and Monongahela Incline cars up Mount Washington for a breathtaking view.

Pittsburgh's taxi cabs need to be called by telephone or hired at a taxi rank.
