Once just an expanse of scrubland by a glorious sandy beach, today the Cypriot resort Protaras is a purpose-built satellite to nearby Ayia Napa. Slightly quieter than its rowdy club-filled neighbour, the resort is a firm favourite with British families who book flights to Protaras every summer to enjoy the sun, sea and expanses of sand on the ten-mile long Fig Tree Bay. It’s a typical seaside resort, built with the specific aim of enticing British holidaymakers: running alongside the beach are numerous villas and hotels, while a plethora of shops, tavernas, restaurants and bars keep the foreign tourists entertained while they’re not sunbathing.

It’s hardly the authentic Cypriot experience, but that’s not really the point for those who match a cheap Protaras flight with a cheery beach-front hotel and enjoy all the activities the resort has to offer.

When to Fly to Protaras

Peak season:

The weather is good for most of the year so the peak season runs for many months. It will be hard to find a cheap flight to Protaras during popular travel times such as school holidays.

Off season:

The real winter lasts only for December and January. The resorts in Cyprus, unlike much of the Mediterranean, tend to stay open in the winter. Spring starts in Mid-February when the almond trees blossom and the countryside becomes green. This can be the perfect time to visit with milder climate, and if you plan ahead you can likely find cheap flights to Protaras before the rush of tourists hit the island.
