The ski resort of Saalbach (often twinned together with its neighbour Hinterglemm as Saalbach-Hinterglemm) is one of the most popular Austrian resorts with British and Dutch skiers. It’s not hard to see why many skiers book flights to Saalbach every year. It’s an attractive village, with classic ski style wooden chalets and a pedestrianised town centre. There are plenty of pisted and off-piste runs, many of which wind down through the mountains in attractive paths through trees. Crucially, for serious skiers, the snow record here is very good.

The ski area is extensive as the resort is based in the middle of ten individual peaks. There are plenty of pistes across all the peaks, of all levels to suit beginner to expert skiers. And there are plenty of lifts, so queues are short. If there is a downside to the resort, it must be that the many South-facing slopes lose their snow relatively early in the year. However, there are plenty of snow canons, so fake snow is pumped out if necessary.

Saalbach Insider Information

  • Saalbach links with Hinterglemm and gives you a large ski area – more typically French than Austrian - which is especially good for intermediate skiers.
  • Go to the Hinterhagalm tea bar for your final stop on the last run back to Saalbach.  Before you know it the place is packed, the Alpine music is loud and the night has started.
  • Walk up and down the middle of the traffic-free main street and enjoy the wooden chalets and carved balconies.  Although there are no cars there is plenty of human traffic all night every night.
