When booking your car hire in China, you should make note of the fact that the laws and requirements change depending on which part of the country you are driving in. If you go to Mainland China, you need a temporary driving licence to be able to hire a car and be aware that an international driving license is not considered as a valid driving license to hire a car in the mainland. However, if you visit Hong Kong, you are allowed to drive if you hold either a temporary driving licence, a regular driving license issued by your home country or an international driving licence. Please keep in mind that your international driving license and your homeland driving license must be valid for at least 12 months from the date of your arrival in Hong Kong to be considered valid. If you are driving in Macao and Taiwan, an international driving licence will be acceptable.
There are some things to consider when driving through different parts of China. Firstly, in mainland China, the steering wheel is on the left, but in Hong Kong and Macau, the wheel is on the right-hand side of the car. In the mainland, you will be driving your car hire in China on the right, while in Hong Kong and Macao, you drive on the left-hand side of the road. By law, seat belts must be worn in the front and back seats of your vehicles at all times. The law considers drinking and driving a serious offence. The maximum alcohol limit is 20mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. While driving your car hire in China, you are required to carry your car insurance documents at all times. Not stopping at red robots in China is considered a criminal offence and it is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone while driving.
Driving your hire car in China can seem overwhelming at times due to the high levels of traffic in most of the major cities, but it doesn't have to be if you pick a car that supports these types of traffic conditions. Driving an automatic vehicle is recommended on high traffic roads. You will find that you will be spending a fair amount of time in the car due to traffic and therefore a luxury car rental in China can make that time more pleasant. We do highly recommend booking a car hire in China that allows you to book a GPS system as an extra option, as your mobile phone map apps might not work in China due to their local laws on international web programs.
The most popular car hire company at China is Hertz. With prices on COMPACT starting at £26/day about 123% more people book with Hertz than other companies in the country.
At £24/day, the cheapest car hire price in China was found in Guangzhou. On average, Shanghai has the cheapest daily rental car price (£30/day), which is 16% below average price for cities in China.
