City overview

Chambery is an attractive town in the Rhone-Alpes region of south east France and is a popular skiing destination. It sits in a valley surrounded by the Alps and bordered to the north by Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake in France. Throughout its history, Chambery has been both a French and an Italian possession and evidence of both is visible. As you wander through the narrow streets of the old city you will come across striking examples of trompe-l’oeil and the Fountain of Elephants. This has striking sculptures of four life-size elephants and was built to honour historic events in India, it is now one of the city’s symbols. Dominating the town is the Chateau of Chambery, originally built as a fortress in the 13th century. Although home to government departments, it is open for public tours and regular concerts are held there. In the surrounding countryside there are several vineyards where you can enjoy wine tasting during the warmer months and a pleasant way to spend a sunny day is by hiring a paddle boat on the lake. Three natural regional parks, the Chartreuse, Bauges and La Vanoise, are an easy drive away. The area has a rich culinary culture and is known for its meats, cheeses and other products from the Alps, such as savoyarde, crepes and tartiflette. There are plenty of fine restaurants both in Chambery and in the ski resorts. Apart from skiing, visitors can also enjoy rock climbing and horse riding, as well as hiking and cycling.
