The town of Comox lies on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the Canadian British Columbia, and is a wonderful choice forholidays thanks to its enviable location in the Comox Valley, known for its magnificent glacier scenery.

The Mount Washington ski area is one of the town’s major attractions, and its state of the art Boomerang lift system has increased its popularity. You’ll enjoy an excellent variety of runs, and downhill slopes range from beginner to expert. The town’s proximity to the area means that you can also make use of the long cross-country ski trails, many of which are located in the Strathcona Provincial Park.

During the summer months of Mayuntil October, you can make use of the lift system at Mount Washington for sightseeing and exploring. The region is a favourite with mountain bike fans (unfortunately, bikes can’t be taken on the lifts) walkers, and climbers. You may enjoy visiting the Forbidden Plateau near Mount Albert Edward, which is part of local tribal legend. The views over the plateau from the Mount Washington Nordic Ski Lodge are spectacular.

Strathcona Provincial Park is the region’s oldest park of its kind, and as well as the Vancouver Island Range’s highest peaks such as Golden Hinde and Mount Albert Edward, you can see Della Falls, the highest waterfall in Canada which can be accessed by a marked trail.

From Mayuntil September the Comox Valley Community Market (CVCM) at the town’s Simms Park is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. Pick up toys, wood carvings, jewellery, soaps and many other gift items made by local craftsmen and artisans. There is also live music and food and snack stalls which add to the friendly atmosphere.

There is something to do all year round in this exceptional part of Canada and unspoilt beaches, fishing in clear waters like the Gold River and friendly locals are all part of its charm.

  • When is the best time to fly to Comox?

The town is a year-round destination, thanks to its exceptional scenery and great range of outdoor activities. Summer festivals like the Filberg Festival or the Island Music Festival bring many visitors to the area from June till August, while skiing and snowboarding are favorite activities from December to March. Quieter times to visit are during the shoulder season months of April and May when spring foliage is at its best or September and October when it’s still pleasant before the snows arrive. Low season is from October to November when many of the seasonal summer events are over, and the winter snows have not yet arrived in the ski areas. Summer is the most expensive time to visit, and the ski season also sees a rise in the cost of flights and accommodations.

  • What is the best way to travel around Comox?

Most visitors get around the town easily on foot, and local bus companies operate frequent services to the ski area and Strathcona Regional Park as well as all parts of Vancouver Island. There are also good local taxi services which charge set fares.
