Diyarbakir overview

Since the Stone Age, the city of Diyarbakir has been an important settlement in south east Turkey, and is now one of the largest cities in the region. Diyarbakir’s long, turbulent history is evident in the imposing black basalt walls that encircle the old city, which are the remains of fortifications from the Middle Ages. Situated on the banks of the Tigris River, Diyarbakir is a treasure trove of magnificent mosques, churches and ancient buildings, of which the most significant is the Great Mosque of Diyarbakir. This astonishing building was built in 1091 and is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in Turkey. There are many historic buildings to explore in Diyarbakir as you stroll through the narrow streets and alleyways of the old city, particularly the city’s fortress, with its domed church, mosque and palace. You can also climb up one of the city’s remaining towers, such as Kechi Burcu, which offers excellent views over the city and the Tigris River. There are four museums located within Diyarbakir’s city centre, which are worth a visit, such as the Archaeological Museum, where you can view original artefacts from various periods in the city’s history. If you want to spend some time taking in the daily life of the local people, take a walk through the Diyarbakir’s new town and visit some of the bars and cafes to sample some of the local dishes, like grilled lamb’s liver or lahmacun, a crispy dough topped with meat and spices. Diyarbakir is a city that offers many fascinating cultural and historical attractions. At first glance Diyarbakir can be overwhelming, but spend a few days here and you will uncover a genuine community with a warm and friendly welcome.
