Located in the central heart of Turkey, ancient Kayseri is today a thriving and modern city. Kayseri has been an important stop on many trading routes for over five millennia and as a consequence boasts an array of grand historic buildings, particularly from the Seljuk era.
In the centre of Kayseri the Byzantine citadel stands proud, made up of what were once the city’s walls. In fact the fortress also has Roman origins and was later built up in the Seljuk era.
Major Seljuk monuments include the vast 13th century, Hunat Hatun Mosque Mosque and the Ulu Cami Mosque. The Seljuk leaders created a large amount of schools in Kayseri, notably the medical school which today houses the Museum of Medical History.
Kayseri offers a great choice of museums that help visitors understand its past. The Archaeological Museum explores Kayseri’s ancient Hittite past whilst the Museum of Seljuk Civilisation offers an insight into one of the city’s most significant eras. Kayseri’s Ottoman history can be explored at the Ethnographic Museum which is housed in a well conserved 15th century building.

Kayseri is overlooked by the majestic Mount Ericyes, the largest mountain in the region. During the summer months the mountain is a popular hiking spot and in the winter it becomes one of Turkey’s most well-known skiing resorts.
One of the many reasons visitors base themselves in Kayseri is to visit Cappadocia, one of the world’s most unusual rock formations. Also known as the ‘fairy chimneys’, the Cappadocian rock formations were created four million years ago by volcanic activity. Over the centuries local people have made the rocks home by building houses and churches into them. It’s worth booking on a guided tour from Kayseri to enjoy a thorough visit of the site.
Many of the central monuments and museums can be explored on foot and one of the best ways to see it all is by way of a guided walking tour. Kayseri boasts an extensive Light Rail Transit System that is modern and well run. Bus services also run across the city and to neighbouring towns and cities.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Erkilet International Airport (ASR) is just 3 miles (5 km) from the city centre. From the airport a public bus service departs regularly from outside the terminal and takes passengers to central Kayseri. Alternatively a choice of taxi services is available from outside the terminal.
