The Minnesota port city of Duluth is situated at the westernmost point of the Great Lakes area, on the shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. A small and friendly city, it has a unique and quirky charm and plenty of attractions. The Aerial Lift Bridge is perhaps the city’s most renowned landmark; a massive steel and cable structure that is over 100 years old. Close to the bridge is the Great Lakes Aquarium. Mostly freshwater, this impressive building features habitats and animals found within the Great Lakes region. The historic Glensheen Mansion is a 39-room Jacobean style building open to the public and offering a fascinating glimpse into the early 20th century. For a fabulous view of the lake and surrounding area you’ll want to visit Enger Park and Tower. The tower offers an unparalleled 360 degree panoramic thrill, and the park is noted for its exquisite Japanese style garden. In many ways it is Canal Park, however, that is the centre of Duluth. This huge green space offers a massive selection of things to enjoy, including the hugely popular Grandma’s Restaurant, the Lake Superior Marine Museum and Duluth Entertainment and Convention Centre, offering shows, concerts and movies. A great family day out can be enjoyed at Lake Superior Zoo, which features hundreds of native and exotic animal species in painstakingly reconstructed environments, open all year round. Of course, no visit to Duluth would be complete without taking advantage of the opportunity for a cruise on beautiful Lake Superior. There are a number of cruise boat options to choose from.

Getting around Duluth

Getting around Duluth is easy and convenient thanks to the comprehensive public transport system offered by the Duluth Transit Authority. During peak hours, an average of 45 buses are in operation. The perfect way to enjoy this attractive part of the world is by way of the North Shore Scenic Railroad. During May to September several trains a day travel through the city centre area and Canal Park before cruising along the Lake Superior shore. Getting from the Airport to the City

Duluth International Airport (DLH) is about 5.5 miles (9 km) northwest of the city. Duluth Transit Authority offers a bus service from the airport into the city; a journey that is reasonably priced and takes around an hour and a quarter. If you prefer a swifter and more direct way into the city, the airport has a taxi area. Fares are slightly open to negotiation.

Duluth International is a small airport that sees little more than 300,000 passengers per year. It’s linked to other major US cities, including Minneapolis, Detroit, and Chicago.
