The city of Graz can best be described as a glorious network of streets, bordered with beautiful Baroque buildings, avant-garde shopping districts and charming cafes. Despite being the second largest city in Austria, this lovely region is often overshadowed by its big sister Vienna, but thanks to its beautiful blend of old and new, discerning travellers are booking flights to Graz for an exciting city break.
A walk through the Old Town is a truly breathtaking one. Here you can get lost amongst the small and intimate streets that lead out to roadside cafes selling local produce where you can sit, relax and observe the surrounding architecture. This stunning region is most famously dominated by the Schlossberg clock tower looking like it belongs in a fairy tale. Visitors can climb the staircase up the hill all the very way to the top, where you’ll be able to witness one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Graz.
Despite the presence of incredible sites such as the Landeszeughaus armoury, Eggenberg Palace and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, Graz can also surprise you. This former Capital of Culture has an incredibly vibrant nightlife and arts scene, with an approximately 50,000 strong community of university students. For example the eye-catching Kunsthaus, otherwise known as “the friendly alien”, hosts regular contemporary art exhibitions and helps give visitors a small taste of modern Graz. And when the sun sets, Graz takes on a whole new form, as truly there is no better way to reflect on a fantastic trip than by dancing the night away in one of the many inner city nightclubs, or by relaxing in a local pub watching the revellers pass you by.
Most of this city is best seen on foot, but should you wish there are plenty of excellent transport links to take advantage of, including a bus and tram network and a reliable taxi service.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Like most international airports, Graz Airport (GRZ) has plenty of ground transportation links to help you get into the city. As well as several car rental facilities within the airport itself, there is also a taxi rank located just outside, but agree your fee with the driver before departing. If you prefer, several shuttle bus companies can be booked to take you direct to your accommodation.
