      2. Zagreb

The island of Hvar, just off the Dalmatian coast by Split, is one of the most popular islands for tourists in Croatia. The Pakleni islands to the south protect Hvar from bad weather and a combination of sun, blue seas and natural beauty make it one of the more idyllic spots to holiday.

Hvar Town is the port and where most travellers stay, either on luxury yachts moored in the harbour or one of the many guest houses situated on the steep steps leading away from the port up into the hills. The town itself has excellent restaurants and bars, along with some pretty architecture. The pace of life here is slow and relaxed. Inland, the island is renowned for its fields of lush, scented lavender. Away from the port, there are far fewer visitors. Explore undiscovered coves and beaches, rolling vineyards and rugged mountains.

All Hvar flights arrive in Split as there is no airport on the island. Numerous ferries arrive from Split every day during the summer months. In winter, check the timetable, or arrive in style on your own yacht…

When to Fly to Hvar

Peak season:

The summer is the most popular season with holidaymakers. It’s possible to swim from about May until October in in the sea. This means that May-June and September-October are great times to visit. Cheap flights to Hvar can be found during this time, and you'll avoid the crowds.

Off season:

Because the main draw of Hvar is its beaches and the sea, the winter period (especially from November to February) is the low season for tourism.

Hvar Insider Information

  • Hvar Town is attractive but pricey. To save money on accommodation, stay in private houses. These are handled by local agencies, or you can just turn up off the boat and go to the house of one of the many old ladies who arrive to look for custom. If you're doing the latter, make sure you ask to look at the room first.
  • Hvar is the lavender capital of Croatia. If you are here in spring it is growing in the fields so get close to take in the scent of this all-round wonder plant.
  • The beach is rocky so head to the Pakleni Islands by taxi-boat from the harbour. Lying on the sand is part of a summer holiday, after all.
  • Hvar harbour is full of yachts and also the place to come for nightlife. Bars and restaurants surround the harbour, though it is often difficult not to feel jealous of those sipping cocktails aboard their yacht. Be prepared for a long climb back to your accommodation - the harbour is much lower than the surrounding town, so wherever you have to head back to is invariably up a large number of steps.
