Durango is situated at a relatively high altitude, so temperatures rarely get too hot. Visit in the summer months of June to August to make the most of the warmest weather, though be aware that this is peak season and so flights are likely to be more expensive than during the transitional months of February or March. Keep your eyes peeled for cheap last minute deals in the peak season, though: you may well be surprised by the surprisingly cheap flights you can find! If you want to experience one of the most quintessential Mexican holidays, then why not book your flights to Durango to coincide with the Mexican Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos?
The landmark that arguably dominates this city’s skyline is the Durango Cathedral. This beautiful edifice is one of the main landmarks in this region, and an inspiring place to spend an hour walking round. If scenic views are your thing then why not visit the mountain bridge known as the Puente de Ojuela. This bridge spans a huge ravine, and traversing it makes you almost feel like you are flying. If you are visiting Durango with children, then be sure to check out the Museo Bebeleche. This interactive museum has plenty of fun things for kids to see and do, and is wonderfully educational as well.
Taxis and hire cars are both popular options when it comes to getting around the city. Durango is, in fact, one of the cities that has the lowest taxi fares in all of Mexico so you can find reasons to permit yourself this luxury during your visit. If you visit Guadiana Park, you can also enjoy a scenic ride on a small train that takes you through pretty gardens, lakeland areas, and woodland too. The highways in the city are currently being modernised and remodelled so as to reduce travel times, so travel in this part of Mexico is set to get more convenient.
Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) is located just 12 miles (19 km) to the south east of Durango. There are both shuttles and taxi services available from the airport: a list can be found on the airport’s website. However, be aware that most of these taxi and shuttle services require you to give advance notice that you will be needing them: it is not always possible just to hop into an airport licensed taxi outside the airport. Getting advance notice means that you can also agree on the fare over the phone beforehand. The airport is also a great place for renting cars, as there are several car rental agencies located within the airport building. If you are able to, teaming up with other passengers who are travelling to the same hotel is a handy way to save money on your taxi fare.
