Granada climate

The summers in Granada (from June to September) are hot and dry with average highs in July and August of more than 32 degrees. The winter months have warm days but cold nights, with temperatures in January usually around the tens. Spring and autumn are warm and sunny, September in particular tends to be hot and dry. In general there is very little rainfall.

Getting around Granada

Buses are the most common way to get around Granada. They’re also the most efficient. You’ll be glad you’re sitting on a bus when it starts chugging up the steep hills of the Albaicín. Once there you can see the Alhambra from the Plaza San Nícolas. The buses run until 11pm and you can catch most of them on the Granada’s main street, Gran Vía.

You can also rely on taxis to get around. They are fairly cheap but rates are a bit higher after the sun sets.

Getting from the airport

The main airport for travellers booking flights to Granada is Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén (GRX) located 9 miles (15 km) west of Granada. Frequent bus service operates from the airport to the city. Taxis and car rental companies are also available.

What is good to know if travelling to Granada?

• A trip to Granada wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the infamous Alhambra – the fortress dating back to the 9th century. Here both Muslim leaders and Catholic monarchs held court for centuries before becoming one of Spain’s most important tourist attractions.
• History buffs can’t miss a trip to the Archaeological Museum which is housed in a stunning Renaissance mansion and boasts some exquisite Moorish relics.
• Sit back, relax and enjoy some fruit tea in one of the Arab teterías or teahouses that line Caldereria Vieja in the Albaicin neighbourhood.
• After a long day of sightseeing rejuvenate tired limbs in one of Granada’s historic Banos Arabes (Arab baths).
