Located in south central Pennsylvania, Lancaster is a city within the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch community. Lancaster, formerly known as Hickory Town, and nicknamed The Red Rose City, is one of the oldest communities within inland United States, and is a cultural destination and tourist attraction with its many colonial period buildings, historical locations, and modern activities. Home of the Hershey chocolate company, Lancaster is also the home of the United States’ 15th president, James Buchanan, and many famous landmarks such as Wheatland, Central Market, and Fulton Opera House. The city is ideally located with many transport links thanks to Interstates 30 and 222, and visitors can begin a new journey to one of the nearby cities, such as Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Newark. As one of the cultural locations of the east coast, Lancaster is packed with museums, historical sites, and plenty of modern activities including shopping at the Park City Centre mall, farmer’s markets, and hiking trails. There are many family owned restaurants and local boutiques within the city centre, offering an authentic taste of Pennsylvania. Historical sites and locations litter the city and surrounding area, including the Landis Valley Museum, Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House, and Rock Ford Plantation. Adventurous visitors to the area will enjoy Long’s Park, Clipper Stadium, and the Dutch Wonderland family amusement park.
The Red Rose Transit Authority operate a bus service across dozens of stops throughout the city and surrounding area. There are also plenty of taxi companies in the city, and there is also an intercity bus and train service for visiting the neighbouring cities and states.
Airport arrivals will land at Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Lancaster, and the city can be reached via hotel shuttles, taxis, car rentals, and public transit. Public buses operate along Route 7 every day except Sunday, however taxis and car rentals are available all week. Buses and car rentals are available for a fixed price but it may be possible to haggle the taxi price before setting off for the city.
