Perugia’s climate makes it a welcoming place for visitors all year round. February to October are the warmest months and when most people decide to book their flights to Perugia. Legend has it that the beautiful Maggiore Fountain here holds the Virgin Mary’s wedding ring. A jewel among the wealth of tourist attractions is the Palazzo dei Priori. This palace boasts frescoes and wooden furniture dating back seven centuries and a beautiful ceiling in the Sala dei Notari. As well as being beautiful to explore during the day, you will also find a vibrant nightlife and good restaurants serving hearty mountain food. And for chocolate lovers, the area is a major producer, so look out for the chocolate shops and cafes.
It is not advisable to drive in the centre of Perugia. The streets are narrow and cobblestoned and many are closed to cars. The city has a good bus service as well as a driverless minimetro which runs above ground. A series of escalators cuts up through the Rocca Paolina taking you through the heart of the medieval city ruins. Plenty of walking tours covering many themes are on offer in Perugia. These include architecture, gardens and botany, and wine making tours amongst others. You can also take a 4×4 safari into the Umbrian landscape of valleys and vineyards.
There is a small airport close to the city, San Franceso d’Assisi Airport (PEG), which serves flights to Perugia from many European cities and direct buses and trains into the city. Most international visitors, however, fly into Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) 130 miles (210 km) away. There is a reasonably priced and direct bus route from Rome Airport to Perugia with a journey time of 3 hours. If you prefer to hire a car for the journey, which also gives you the freedom to explore Umbria, you will find the major car hire companies represented at Fiumicino Airport.
