Located in the American state of Washington, Spokane is home to great food, sporting attractions and cultural events that will satisfy any holiday maker.
One of the great attractions of the area surrounding the city is the natural landscape. This has been sculpted into 33 golf courses, and has encouraged a way of life which embraces the outdoors. Head out kayaking on the river, hike out to see the famous “bowl and pitcher” rock formations of Riverside State Park or experience skiing and snowboarding in the nearby mountains.
The Minnehaha Park is also one of America’s finest spots for mountain biking and trail riding, as well as rock climbing and hang-gliding. All of this makes Spokane an ideal spot for active travellers.
If all that outdoor fun sounds too intense, there are other delights to explore in town. Spokane boasts some superb traditional American diners, as well as a fascinating Dairy Museum, which reflects the agricultural nature of eastern Washington.
Spokane is also a wonderful town to stroll around. A particular highlight is a walk over the Monroe Bridge, which crosses the waterfalls at the centre of town. But the city centre is small enough to be walkable or navigated by bicycle.
Culture fans will enjoy a trip to the dance or music events held nightly at the Knitting Factory or the Bing Crosby Theatre. The area around the city also hosts plenty of vineyards and hop farms, where some of America’s finest brews are created, and all of them welcome curious visitors. August and September also see the region’s orchards open their gates to an annual Peach Festival, which celebrates one of Spokane’s trademark products.
Spokane is the kind of destination that is great to visit all year-round, depending upon your interests. Fans of Alpine sports should visit during the winter, between December and February and look out for accommodation and ski hire deals. For others, the months of June till August are peak festival season and the weather is ideal for outdoor pursuits. But the autumn is equally pleasant, and September and October will provide perfect hiking conditions.
The Spokane Transit Authority operates an excellent public bus service that will take you to most locations in the city, and maps can be picked up at most newsagents or petrol stations in town. Cycling can be hard work due to the hills of the city, but it should be a safe (and healthy) way to get around, while car rental is another great option.
