They also tried to trick us into buying their insurance even though everything I read said it wasn’t legal and that if we had coverage elsewhere that would work. Rushed me to sign off on “just a basic agreement “. Said gas was included (didn’t want that, too late) and I could return it empty. Reading contract for return, it said gas would be charged if I didn’t fill it up (I had to) and the price became $1,500+ for 9 days. Thieves! Thieves! Thieves!

This was one of the worst car rental places I’ve ever been to. Be aware that Mexican law requires you to have personal liability insurance. This is why the rental rates themselves appear so low but then when you arrive you are forced to take out an expensive insurance policy. In our case a five day rental was $60 but the insurance was over $300. Even though we have car insurance provided by our credit card, this was limited to CDW so we were forced to buy the rental Companies insurance policy. While this is not unique to Europcar the attitude of the staff was not friendly. Everyone in the agency was fighting the same fight. The return process can also be very slow. In our case there were not enough staff processing car returns so it took over 30 mins.
