Cheap Car Hire in Ghana from £56

To obtain car hire in Ghana, there are a couple of requirements you'll need to meet. Firstly, you must be at least 20 years old, with a valid driving licence that you've held for at least two years before hiring a car in Ghana. If your driving licence isn't in the local language or English, you'll need an international driving permit alongside your home-country driving licence. You'll also need proof of identity, preferably a passport, and a valid credit card with the name of a present driver. If you've booked online, the same credit card used plus the card owner will need to be present when collecting your cheap car hire in Ghana. Bear in mind, if you're picking up a hired car in Ghana and you're under the age of 25, you're likely to be charged a young driver surcharge on top of your hire fee. Some car hire in Ghana is not available for self driving, so be sure to double check this, unless you want a chauffeur.

Driving your car hire in Ghana, you'll want to familiarise yourself with some of the road rules, to avoid running into trouble with the law. You'll be driving your hired car in Ghana on the right-hand side of the road and passing on the left-hand side, and driving on the shoulder of the road is not allowed. The country has very strict no-drinking-and-driving laws, with a legal blood alcohol level of 0%, so avoid driving your car hire in Ghana whilst under the influence. It is illegal to use mobile phones while driving, unless accompanied by a hands-free device. If you're entering or approaching a roundabout, you must give way to vehicles approaching from the left side, no matter which road is considered the main road. Keep up to date with local departments of motor vehicles to ensure you know when new laws are put into place.

Deciding on the type of cheap car hire you need in Ghana depends largely on your personal needs. Traffic can be quite congested at times and roads aren't always the best quality, so you'll want to pick a fuel-efficient car hire with good handling. If you're travelling with a family, consider picking one of the larger vehicles like an SUV or 4x4 to get around. The Hyundai Tucson is a popular choice for many when choosing a car hire in Ghana. If you're travelling with fewer people, consider opting for something like a Volkswagen Golf, which has excellent handling and is fuel efficient. If you're going to be driving mostly in the main cities, opt for car hire with automatic transmission, but if you're planning on travelling long distances and exploring the country, a manual transmission will be easier on fuel.
