The gentleman checking me in was awesome! He helped me tremendously to finish up the process of renting our car. He turned what could have been a mishap on my part into a great experience renting a car. I would return.

Awful experience! Avis Cabo San Lucas required that you purchase their insurance at $85 per day. Additionally they require a hold of $3,200 on the classification of vehicle which was a small SUV. They also double charged me for the hold so I had $6,400+ USD held on my car. Stay away!

Overall, a good experience. It would have been excellent if Avis had not wanted to not honor the reservation price. Avis did eventually honor the reservation price, but here was no need to go through a period of thinking that I was going to pay about twice as much as the reservation price. The reservation price was excellent.

Rented a minivan, they didn’t have one available and wanted to offer a smaller car. I got a large SUV, which was not enough space - we made it work. You have to go through 3 counters to provide documents, excessive.

This was Avis at puerto Vallarta airport. Regular size car. The line was extremely slow and staff moved very slowly. Took an hour to get the car with only 1 person ahead of me. Price was ok but I declined insurance since my credit card and auto insurance policy cover the car. They insisted on putting a $4200 hold on my credit card in case there was any damage- even a scratch. Crazy. Won’t rent there again.
I couldn't have a vehicle, your booking was not taking by Budget ... I arrive by Budget and They tell me that there was no vehicle for me. I showed the confirmation mail, but they tell me that there was no vehicle for me ... I lost a lot of time to find a new vehicle in another rent-a-car

They didn’t respect the reservation and the car was not available at the time of pick up. Terrible experience. We ended up using a different rental car

Car was very very dirty. Car seat we had for my child was caked in feces and smelled of urine as well. Lastly, someone who worked there also tipped off my entire family to corrupt cops who pulled us over (we had two cars, how would they know we were together unless being tipped off) who coerced us to pay them $500 or else go to jail. We had 5 children and my elderly parents with us. Terrifying experience.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. THEY ARE A COMPLETE SCAM. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM. They extorted nearly $1000 from us for returning the car a few hours late. For context, that is more than we paid for the entire 2 weeks of the rental. They also did not give us the car that we ordered. We ordered a 14 passenger van and they gave us an 11 passenger one. KAYAK should remove them from their site.

I was pretty sure that I selected a vehicle that was supposed to be picked up at the terminal and instead they had an employee at the terminal and a shuttle outside of the terminal so there was an inconvenience for us on our trip.

A terrible experience. First, they asked me to sign without checking the car. They had one of the doors that didn’t close and we had kids with us. The car was dirty and smelled, I had to put gas a soon as I got the car because it didn’t have any. The service was horrible. They tried to charge me for an extra insurance policy for $500. When I went to return the car they “found some damage” that was on the video and pictures we took when we got the car. They didn’t want us to show all the pictures they had in the file. They went ahead and charged $800 more to my credit card. I’ve brought the issue to my bank because this is fraud!

I never rented the car. What they expected me to pay in additional to what I already paid plus deposit exceeds the cost of my whole trip. I used Ubers instead.

I could not even get my car because supposedly i needed more insurance that costed more than the car rental price
I had reserved a truck, however when I arrived, they said it was unavailable because it was broken. I was going to a remote destination and needed a vehicle that would safely navigate the terrain. They gave me a front wheel drive small SUV and they said it would be fine. During my journey to my destination, there were half a dozen situations where they were completely wrong. Fortunately, I have experience navigating difficult terrain. And with several attempts managed to get to my destination and return. Both were equally stressful. Unfortunately, this will be my last rental through this company. The people were nice. The car was clean but but not what I needed or asked for...

The staff were friendly and the vehicle was ok- vehicle lacked power. Overcharging for insurance was equal to 40% of the total charges. This creates caution for me when renting with kayak.

Convenient and decent price (though not cheap) from a reputable brand. People at site are helpful. Oscar was good. Word of caution: check your vehicle VERY carefully for damage before accepting the car and take pictures. They may claim you damaged the car and try to withhold your deposit if they think you damaged the car.
Find answers to frequently asked questions about car hires in Mexico, including policies, requirements, and more. FAQs were last updated on 9 September 2026.
What are the requirements to hire a car in Mexico?
In order to use a hired car in Mexico, you will be required to present your driving licence from your home country, along with an International Driving Licence as some Mexico car hire companies may ask for it. You will need to be at least 25 years old to use hired cars in Mexico, although they may allow younger customers with at least two years minimum experience. Most companies will apply a surcharge if you are under 25 years old. You will be asked to pay the deposit with a credit card and to show your passport as evidence of identity. There are varying levels of insurance available and we advise that you investigate them to find the one that best suits your needs during your stay.
What are the rules for driving in Mexico?
If you are planning on using a hired car in Mexico, then you need to know that they drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. All passengers in the car, including the driver are required by law to wear a seatbelt and using a mobile phone is prohibited. You may drive hired cars in Mexico using hands free and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%. We advise you to always carry change with you while driving and to stick to the toll roads as although you have to pay, there is generally less traffic on these roads, and they tend to be safer as well. It is illegal to wear headphones while driving and the use of SATNAV is permitted, but you are advised not to use it while in control of a moving car. We recommend that you check with each city’s department of motor vehicles for recent law changes during your stay.
What type of car is recommended for driving in Mexico?
In general, the quality of the roads in Mexico is not great, and you may find that the surface of the road is full of potholes, debris, or washouts. This will depend on the area in Mexico that you are driving, but you may also find that the lanes are narrow with steep, tight corners and bends. We recommend that you investigate cheap hired cars in Mexico that come with SATNAV and aircon to combat the heat and humidity. We also recommend 4X4s and SUVs if you plan on driving across country, or outside the city as they will give you more security when it comes to adverse road quality, and they will be better equipped to deal with varied terrain and weather. Depending on where you are driving, you may want to investigate what type of wheels you have on your car to give you the most control possible while driving.
What is the most popular car hire provider in Mexico?
When hiring a car in Mexico, the most popular provider of hire cars among Cheapflights users is Payless, and with prices around £9/day, it’s easy to understand why. The most popular car type from Payless is SUV, which starts as low as £8/day.
