Hosted by BA account manager Lucie Wesley, the BA2730 flight welcomed guests including the island’s president Ricardo Melchior and the chief executive of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, Miguel Ángel Santos, as well as 200 BA customers.
Ricardo Melchior said: “We are thrilled to welcome British Airways back to the island of Tenerife.
“These new flights are already proving incredibly popular and perfectly complement the fantastic quality accommodation options we can offer visitors to our island.”
Peter Simpson, British Airways’ Gatwick director, added: “Tenerife is a destination that especially appeals to the UK market due to its year round sunny climate, the diversity of its landscape and beaches and the wealth of activities it can offer.”
The new five-time weekly Tenerife service will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and offers the first business-class service from the UK to Tenerife for five years.
The airline’s new “hand baggage only” fare is available on this route.
Launched in February and now available on all 32 of BA’s short-haul routes from Gatwick, the fare allows passengers to take a reasonably-sized (56cm x 45cm x 25cm) carry on case aboard flights, as well as a laptop bag or handbag.
Children will also enjoy the same luggage allowance as adults, allowing families to pool their luggage together.
“The new fares have been very well received by customers and we have now decided to make the discounted prices much more widely available,” said Peter Simpson, director of Gatwick for British Airways.
“We are confident that they will prove popular during the busy summer season as short-haul customers continue to take advantage of our generous two-bag hand luggage policy. Those who still want to check in a bag will simply pay the same price they do now.”
